ABSTRACT

Working with difficult people is not only frustrating and stressful; it can also cost you, your project and your organization time and money. This program will provide powerful insights into how to develop the interpersonal and communication skills you need to recognize and respond to difficult and non-productive behavior in project team members, co-workers AND managers. You will be able to separate people from problems, act rather than react, and shape and encourage acceptable, productive behavior. The emphasis is on understanding why difficult people behave the way they do—and how best to deal with them. Through the administration of a proven Personal Assessment Instrument, you will be able to determine your personal preferences in dealing with conflict and assess whether the use of your preferred style will lead to conflict resolution and project performance improvement.

APPROACH:

This powerful course, combining project management and people management skills, was originally created by Michael Johnson, PhD and Lee R. Lambert, PMI Fellow. Dr. Johnson, a Clinical Psychologist, Attorney and Professor at the University of Minnesota, was a significant contributor to the development of the Personal Profile Assessment Instrument (DiSC). He was known throughout the world for his ground breaking work in the area of personal behavior traits and behavior modification. Mike and Lee were colleagues and partners in presenting workshops throughout the world that combined the power of project management and the ability to understand and deal with unique personal behavior. Sadly, our friend and colleague, passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. As a tribute to Dr. Johnson and his 20 year partnership, Lee has decided to continue the tradition by offering this very special program for the first time since Mike’s death. Lee will capitalize upon Dr. Johnson’s people management wisdom and will present hard-hitting examples of how to identify, and deal with people who are causing your project to encounter unnecessary problems. Through a series of mini-lectures/case examples and hands-on exercises, you will be exposed to the most effective and productive approaches for dealing with people based challenges in a project/business setting. Participants will be divided into teams and given the opportunity to practice their newly acquired skills and strategies. Each student will complete the Thomas-Killmann Conflict Mode self assessment instrument before being faced with several real-world project/people conflict situations in need of conflict management.

These 8 hours may change your life—forever!
